The American Studies Center and IAS successfully hold a seminar on 'The US Election, Sino-American Relations and International Changes'

A seminar on the theme "The US Election, Sino-American Relations and International Changes" co-sponsored by Peking University's American Studies Center and Institute of Area Studies was held on November 14, 2020, at the School of International Studies, PKU. With the 2020 US presidential election having concluded, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is expected to take office as the new president of the US. A series of issues concerning the election and upcoming adjustments in internal affairs and foreign policy by the new government have attracted extensive attention from the world. First, what were the major factors that impacted the results of 2020 presidential election and congressional election? Second, how will the political, economic and social policies of the US be adjusted after the elections? What changes will US party politics and interest-group politics undergo? Also, how will US international strategy and foreign policy be adjusted and how might Sino-American relations change after the elections?


The seminar invited a dozen experts and scholars to discuss the aforementioned topics from multiple perspectives. They were, respectively, Shen Guofang, former ambassador to the United Nations and former spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Xu Bu, director of the China Institute of International Studies; Zhao Mei, a research fellow at the Institute of American Studies, CASS; Da Wei, professor of PKU's School of International Studies; Xie Tao, director of the School of International Relations and Diplomacy at Beijing Foreign Studies University; Zhang Yuncheng, a research fellow at China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations; Li Zhanjun, former chairman of Beijing Publications Distribution Group; Zhu Wenli, professor of PKU's School of International Studies; Fan Shiming, associate professor of PKU's School of International Studies; Yu Tiejun, deputy director of PKU's Institute of International and Strategic Studies; Lei Shaohua, associate professor of PKU's School of International Studies; Jie Dalei, associate professor of PKU's School of International Studies; and Qi Haotian, assistant professor of PKU's School of International Studies.


Wang Yong, director of the American Studies Center, PKU, and a professor of PKU's School of International Studies, on behalf of the sponsors of the seminar, thanked all the participants for their excellent presentations about US politics, economy and foreign policy. He also expressed his hope that the participants would continue to show their support toward activities of PKU's American Studies Center and the Institute of Area Studies in the future.
