The 21st lecture of the “Adventus Amicorum” salon series was held by the Institute of Area Studies Peking University (PKUIAS) on April 27, 2024. Scholars from several universities in Indonesia engaged in productive exchanges with representatives from China. The event was moderated by Kong Tao, a senior research fellow at Digital Finance Research Center and associate research fellow at China Social Science Survey Center of Peking University.
The Indonesian scholars included Prof. Evi Fitriani of Faculty of International Relations, Universitas Indonesia; Dr. Teguh Dartanto, dean of Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Indonesia; Prof. Nina Nurmila, dean of Faculty of Education, Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII); Dr. I Made Andi Arsana of Faculty of Engineering Universitas Gajah Mada (UGM), Yogyakarta and four other scholars. The Chinese representatives included Zhang Jianping, deputy director and research fellow, Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation (CAITEC), Ministry of Commerce; Fang Ruifeng, deputy director, International Cooperation Service Center, Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC); Qi Fuquan, a research fellow at CAAC; Prof. Zhai Kun, deputy director of PKUIAS; Prof. Song Qingrun from the Department of Asian Regional Studies, School of Asian Studies, Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU); and representatives from various enterprises, totaling more than twenty individuals.
The Indonesian experts provided brief introductions to their research areas, school profiles and understanding of Sino-Indonesian relations. They stated that their respective institutions had engaged in exchanges with scholars from Australia, Europe and other regions previously, and that they now hoped to enhance understanding and friendship with Chinese university scholars to promote academic exchanges and cooperation between the two sides. Prof. Nina Nurmila, expressed her school’s welcome to more Chinese students and scholars to attend exchange programs at UIII as well as her hope for closer academic and educational exchanges between the two countries in the future.
Dr. I Made Andi Arsana, introduced the complexity of maritime issues in Southeast Asia and the perspectives of Indonesian scholars. Dr. Teguh Dartanto expressed his belief that Indonesia’s economic development was interdependent with China’s and emphasized the need for mutual progress toward enhancing further cooperation in the economic fields of both countries.
Zhang Jianping and Song Qingrun briefly discussed economic cooperation and academic exchanges between China and Indonesia. Zhang Jianping emphasized that concerns about China’s economic downturn were entirely unnecessary, evidence for which could be revealed by a field investigation into the Chinese economy. Meanwhile, with infrastructure construction and new energy vehicles as indicators, there was still vast room for future economic cooperation between China and Indonesia, he said.
Other attendees engaged in in-depth discussions with experts and scholars on such issues as Indonesia’s energy development during the financial crisis and Indonesian resource standards. After the seminar, the participating scholars held further in-depth exchanges on related issues.
