The 14th Broadyard Workshop(博雅工作坊), on the theme “The People and Societies of Asia: Anthropological Fieldwork,” was held at Peking University on November 3, 2018. Eight experts and scholars from universities and institutions, including Peking University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Minzu University of China, participated at the meeting and shared their insights based on their fieldwork experience.
The Director of PKU’s Institute of Area Studies (PKUIAS), Qian Chengdan, gave a welcome speech. He emphasized that anthropology is an important field in contemporary social sciences that focuses on people’s living conditions and the relationship between people and society, and requires researchers to do a tremendous amount of hard work. The findings of the attendees hailing from different disciplines would open our horizons and allow us to have a glimpse of people’s life in other countries and regions, he said.
During the conference, eight experts and scholars gave academic presentations on field investigations in different countries and regions, such as Malaysia, the Philippines, Israel, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Prof. Gao Bingzhong from the Department of Sociology, PKU, gave his closing remarks after the presentations.
During the follow-up discussion session, the presenters answered questions from the audience.
